Goffstown boys and girls are off to a great start to their seasons. The small but talented boys squad is hoping to again finish near the top of DII and qualify for the meet of champions as a team. The deeper girls team has strong numbers and a lot of promising talent to help the team do even better than last year.
The first meet of the season was held on Tuesday September 2nd in Sandown the Jamie Martin Invitational. This race was delayed by almost an hour by thunder storms which failed to cool off the high 80 degree temperatures even slightly. Despite the heat the boys team finished second out of 16 teams and girls team finished second out of 13 teams. The boys were lead by Senior standout Cody Murphy and Sophomore Jackson Brannen who finished 4th and 7th respectively followed by strong performances by Matt Shaw and Mason Foley. The girls team was lead by Junior Becca Zylak and Senior Libby Gendron who lead the team with 4th and 5th place performances followed by good races by Maggie Fifield and Grace Odell.
Our second race was the Coach Korcoulis Invitational on Saturday September 6th on of the hottest days of the year. So while many people ventured out for on last swim of the summer the GHS XC teams raced their way up a tough hilly course at Hillsbourgh-Deering High school. Goffstown boys finished third out of eleven teams behind the talented D1 Concord team and D2 champion team Oyster River teams. Again lead by Cody Murphy and Jackson Brannen who finished 2nd and 5th respectively. The girls team finished 5th of 10 teams. Lead my Libby Gendron and Becca Zylak who finished 8th and 15th overall. Concord girls dominated this race by putting 6 girls in to top 11!
Looking forward he XC teams will be running a 4pm race at Merrimack High School on Tuesday September 9th and then a 10am race at Oyster River on Saturday September 13th.
