The boys varsity soccer team earned their first win of the 2014 season in exciting fashion Friday evening in Amherst against Souhegan High School by a score of 2-1.
Coach Lovering described it as a "Great hard fought game....great finish for Goffstown". The first 40 minutes produced very few chances as both teams battled to control possession and freshman center-midfielder Mike Fortin helped keep Goffstown in control throughout the first half.
The second half was a completely different story. As time ticked away, the number of chances increased and the excitement intensified. Souhegan controlled the play and was forcing their will and desire to remain undefeated. Lovering said "Maxx Chambers (9 saves) played really well along with Dylan Skinner at right back". Goffstown's strong defense were able to withstand the Saber's pressure until Matt Hopfenspirger scored off a Devan Casey corner in the 71st minute.
The grizzlies experienced roster increased their intensity and attack trying to find the equalizer but Souhegan deflected every effort until Jack Russo earned a corner with less than 2:00 minutes remaining. Fortin delivered the ball to the box and Peter Steckowych put it in the back of the net. All tied 1-1.
With overtime looming and both teams playing a defensive formation in the final minute of regulation, Sam Heidenreich received a long pass from Jack Russo with one defender in the way. Heidenreich powered through and fired a 20 yard shot by keeper Teigue Young (5 saves) to give Goffstown the dramatic win.
